If you've spent any time around yoga studios, healing spaces, or wellness content online, you've probably heard the word "energy" thrown around a lot. Low energy. Stuck energy. Raising your energy. Protecting your energy. It can start to feel vague, or even a little intimidating if you don't know where to start.

So let's ground it. At SOHAM Yoga, when we talk about energy, we're talking about something both ancient and surprisingly practical — and you don't need any prior experience to start understanding your own.

Energy, in Simple Terms

Strip away the mysticism for a second. Every part of you — your thoughts, your emotions, your nervous system, even your muscles — runs on some form of activation and signal. Traditions like yoga and Ayurveda described this thousands of years ago as "prana," or life force. Modern language might call it your nervous system state, your vibe, your capacity, or simply how "charged" or "depleted" you feel on a given day.

You already know this intuitively. You can feel the difference between:

  • Walking into a room and feeling instantly at ease, versus feeling tense

  • A morning where you feel light and clear, versus foggy and heavy

  • Being around certain people who leave you feeling recharged, versus drained

That felt sense — that's energy. Not something abstract happening somewhere else, but something you're already tracking in your body every day, often without naming it.

Why "Frequency" Is a Useful Way to Think About It

We often describe energy in terms of frequency — are you running "high" or "low," "open" or "contracted." This isn't about good versus bad. Low, slow, quiet energy has its place (rest, grief, integration). The goal isn't to be "high vibe" all the time — it's to become aware of where you actually are, so you can meet yourself there instead of overriding it.

Most people move through life on autopilot, reacting to stress, screens, and obligations without ever checking in on their own state. Practices like yoga, breathwork, and sound healing exist to interrupt that autopilot — to give you a moment to actually notice: where am I right now?

How You Actually Start Working With Your Energy

You don't need years of training to begin. A few accessible entry points:

  • Breath — Your breath is the fastest lever you have. Slow, intentional breathing shifts your nervous system state within minutes.

  • Movement — Yoga isn't just stretching; it's a way of physically moving stored tension and emotion through the body.

  • Sound — Vibration and tone (like in a sound bath) can shift your state in ways that are hard to access through thinking alone.

  • Stillness — Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply stop and notice, without trying to fix or change anything yet.

Where This Leads

This is exactly the territory we go deeper into through our classes, sound healing sessions, and — for those ready to go further — The Octave, our 8-day intensive built entirely around this idea of consciously shifting your personal frequency.

If you're curious where you're starting from, we built a simple way to check in with yourself:

You don't need to have this all figured out before you begin. You just need to start paying attention.
